A Town Split by a County Line

Spray Foam Insulation in Abernathy comes with a quirk. Most of the city sits in Hale County, and about a quarter of it extends south into Lubbock County. OpenEI's climate zone lists put Hale County in Zone 4B and Lubbock County in Zone 3B, so the line between two energy climate zones runs right through town. ENERGY STAR recommends R-60 for an uninsulated attic in Zone 4B and R-49 in Zone 3. In practice we aim for the higher number on a Hale County house.

Founded with buildings on rollers

Abernathy's town site was platted on July 8, 1909, and named for M.C. Abernathy; Monroe Abernathy was treasurer of the South Plains Investment Company that developed it. Wikipedia tells how buildings from nearby Bartonsite were put on rollers and pulled by steam tractors to the new town that summer, and the first train arrived that fall. The city was not incorporated until 1924.

A town of owners

The 2020 census counted 1,178 housing units in Abernathy, 10.9% vacant. Among occupied homes, 73.6% were owner-occupied, a high share that means many residents plan to stay and get the full return on insulation work. All residents were counted as rural, and many properties include shops, barns or equipment sheds.

What we usually do here

For houses, we seal and insulate the attic to the zone target, then look at walls, bonus rooms and ducts. For older homes we check for old wiring and roof leaks before covering anything. For farm buildings, closed-cell foam on the steel stops condensation and keeps the space usable in winter and summer.

Abernathy Questions

Which attic R-value should I aim for in Abernathy?

If your house is on the Hale County side, Zone 4B guidance applies, and ENERGY STAR suggests R-60 for a bare attic. On the Lubbock County side, R-49. We note the target on the quote.

Can you insulate an old farmhouse outside town?

Yes. We check the attic, walls and any crawl space, look for old wiring and leaks, then recommend sealing and insulation for each area.

Do you spray equipment barns?

Yes. Closed-cell foam on the steel insulates and stops dripping. We plan around equipment that cannot be moved.
