A Farm Town With Older Houses
Spray Foam Insulation in Idalou is often a mix of house work and farm building work. Idalou grew up around a South Plains and Santa Fe Railway depot in the early 1910s. Wikipedia records a post office in 1917, a two-story brick school built in 1919 after the first one burned, and incorporation in 1925 with 538 residents. Today it is the agricultural center for cotton farming in northeast Lubbock County, with a co-op cotton gin in town.
Older homes, thinner attics
With a town that has been building houses for a century, many Idalou homes predate modern energy codes. That usually shows up in the attic: a few inches of old insulation, packed down or uneven, with open gaps around flues, plumbing and wiring. ENERGY STAR recommends adding R-38 where 3 to 4 inches already sit on the attic floor in Zone 3, and OpenEI places Lubbock County in Zone 3B. We seal the gaps first, then blow in new insulation to depth or remove the old material if it is soiled.
Housing in town
The 2020 census counted 921 housing units in Idalou, with 10.6% vacant and a homeowner vacancy rate of 2.6%. All residents were counted as rural. Many homeowners also have a shop, garage or barn on the property, and those steel buildings are a large share of our work around town.
Steel buildings and farm work
Cotton country runs on equipment, and equipment lives in metal buildings. Closed-cell spray foam on the walls and roof keeps the steel from dripping in winter and slows the summer heat, so a shop is usable year-round. We plan around harvest season and equipment that cannot be moved easily.

Idalou Questions
My Idalou house is old. Should the attic insulation come out?
If it is dry and clean, new insulation can go on top after sealing. If it is soiled, wet or crushed, removal first is better. We will show you what we find.
Can you work around harvest season?
Yes. Tell us when the shop or barn is free, and we will schedule the spray around it.
What foam do you use on a metal shop?
Closed-cell, because it bonds to steel, slows vapor and stops condensation while it insulates.
