A Planned Town Below the Caprock

Spray Foam Insulation in Post works with some of the oldest housing in the region. Post was founded as Post City in 1907 by cereal maker C.W. Post as a model town. According to Wikipedia, his Double U Company built houses, the Algerita Hotel, a gin and a textile plant, planted trees along every street, and rented and sold homes and farms to settlers. Post even experimented with rainmaking from 1910 to 1913, setting off explosives in the sky; the records show it failed.

Older homes

Post's population peaked around 4,800 in 1964 with the local oil industry. Its housing count has hardly changed lately: 1,419 units in 2000 and 1,422 in 2020, with 16.5% vacant in 2020. With so little change in the count, most houses in town are not new. Older homes usually have thin attic insulation, open chases and leaky wall cavities. We seal the attic floor, bring the insulation to depth and blow dense-pack into closed walls where it fits.

Hotter than the plains above

Post sits on the edge of the caprock escarpment at the southeast edge of the Great Plains, and its normals run a little warmer than Lubbock's. Its normals show July highs averaging 95.2F and January lows of 28.8F, with about 22 inches of precipitation a year. Garza County is listed in Climate Zone 3B by OpenEI, where ENERGY STAR recommends R-49 for an attic with no insulation.

Check first

In very old houses we look closely for old wiring, past roof leaks and loose-fill materials like vermiculite before recommending anything. Those need to be dealt with before insulation covers them.

Shops and ranch buildings

Ranching, farming and oilfield service all use steel buildings around Post. Closed-cell foam on the steel stops condensation and slows the summer heat.

Post Questions

Can you insulate a very old house in Post?

Usually yes. We check wiring, past leaks and any old loose fill first, then seal and insulate the attic and blow insulation into closed walls where possible.

Is foam or blown-in better for an older attic?

On an open attic floor, sealing plus blown-in is usually the better value. Foam is better on vaulted ceilings, in rooflines with ducts and in steel buildings.

Do you serve ranches outside Post?

Yes, including shops and barns on ranch and farm properties around town.
